Hi Reader,
Steve Welty here, CEO of Good Life Property Management. This month we are working on improving our newsletter format, and we’re moving to ConvertKit to provide you with a better experience that brings value to each newsletter we send.
The term landlord is outdated. In fact, I looked it up and it comes from 11th century England during the feudal system. Back then, land ownership was concentrated in the hands of nobility. These powerful figures were called "lords." These lords granted portions of their land (fiefs) to lesser nobles (knights) in exchange for military service and loyalty.
The California Association of Realtors has already started changing their rental forms from “Landlord” to “Housing Provider”. I like this direction. It highlights how important our business is. We provide housing for people. It’s a noble profession, not run by powerful nobility like back in England, but everyday people who worked hard, saved their money, and achieved the American Dream 2.0: owning a rental property.
But it’s been increasingly more difficult to provide housing. Since 2020, state and local governments have enacted more rent control laws that make it more difficult to be a housing provider. I feel these laws hurt good tenants—the people they’re designed to protect.
As Jesus says in Luke 12:48, “To whom much is given, much shall be required.” So we must dust ourselves off and get to work trying to help make things better. This leads to an important question:
How will we have made the world a better place by us having been here?
Here are some ways we can answer this as housing providers:
- I will stay informed on new rental legislation.
- I will call/email my representatives when I disagree with a proposed bill.
- I will vote against representatives who support rental laws that hurt the community.
- I will take great care of my tenants as they are my customers.
- I will hold rental property long-term and leave my family quality income-producing assets.
If we can do these 5 things, we are Housing Heroes.
